A Tribute to R Lavennder Lace |
In 1986 a grey filly was born. She was by the multi champion, famous sire - "The Chief Justice", one of the greatest English sires that ever lived and was out of the mare Kaziya. Kaziya was a spunky English mare owned by Sylvia Beahr. Kaziya was leased from Sylvia by Rex and Deb Meyers in order to create this great horse. The resulting little grey Filly was named R Lavennder Lace -- "R" standing for "Rajah Arabians" which was Rex and Deb's farm. |

In 1989, Sharon (Chaffin) Anderson (daughter of Nettie and Ed Chaffin of the famous Shar-Mar Arabians) purchased then 3 year old Lacey. Lacey was trained under saddle by Sylvia's son, Rich Beahr. Sharon showed her all over the Midwest in English and Country English classes and they won a LOT. |
Her very first show was in 1990 at the IaAHA Blackhawk Show where she entered one class. She placed 2nd out of 4 entries. She then went onto the IaAHA Fall Classic later in the season and was named CHAMPION English Pleasure Jr Horse and overall CHAMPION Amateur Owner English Horse. From 1990 - 1993, Lacey and Sharon traveled all over the midwest to many shows and racked up many English Championships to their credit. In 1994, they switched over to the new "Country English" classes that were being offered and continued to win. |

In 1995, Russ and Kelly went to look at Lacey who was now up for sale. Sharon had developed cancer and was unable to continue to show Lacey. They worked out a deal with Bryan and Sharon and Lacey came to live with them. Lacey was 9 years old. Kelly didn't know how to ride saddle seat so Sharon started to give Kelly some riding lessons. Then Kelly had an awful accident and shattered her left leg. She was in the hospital for 2 weeks and in a wheelchair for months. Then followed a walker for many more months, then crutches, then surgery, then crutches. This went on for 2 years. Kelly couldn't ride at all. This great horse sat in the pasture through 1995. |

In 1996, Gary and Frankie Paine and their daughters, Amy and Kerry asked if they could borrow Lacey for the 1996 show season. Lacey was in the ring once again. The two young girls took Lacey all over and showed her in English Pleasure and Native Costume, They did so well that they kept her through 1997 and continued to win everywhere. |

In 1998, Lacey was back home with Russ and Kelly once again. Krystle (Russ and Kelly's daughter) began to have an interest in horses and she would ride Lacey around the farm. Lacey was a very hot horse and a good one for Krystle to learn on ... |
|
Krystle got to be a better rider and decided to try her hand riding Lacey out in public. She rode her in a few parades. |
and then she tried showing her as a western horse ....and that didn't work very well... Lacey was born to be an English Horse and didn't like to go slow. |

It wasn't until year 2000 that Krystle had enough experience to take Lacey into the show ring. She showed her in English Pleasure and Native Costume. Lacey was quite a "hot" horse so she was very much a handful! She was somewhat quiet outside the ring but when she was going into the ring through the gate, people would describe her as a rocket ship -- her tail would start to go up and up and up and then she would EXPLODE like a keg of dynamite as she entered the ring. She was incredibly hot in the ring and quite a lot to hang onto. Krystle never felt comfortable showing Lacey. She liked her western horse Starfire much better. |

In 2001, Kelly got her leg working better and jumped on and started riding Lacey in Native Costume. Krystle told her mom that there was no way she'd be able to stay on top of Lacey in the ring. Kelly couldn't post and push up and down with her knee in such bad shape, but she could walk and maybe run on horseback so she was going to give it a try -- after all ... Lacey was her horse and she hadn't been able to show her at all since they bought her. |
|
Well, Kelly WAS able to stay on Lacey and they showed all over the midwest in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Illinois in 2001 and 2002. In 2002 Kelly and Lacey were named RESERVE CHAMPION OVERALL HIGH POINT COSTUME winners. In 2003, they started off the season showing again but Lacey developed a bad cough and they had to quit traveling and showing. Lacey had developed emphysema and was having a hard time breathing. Through 2003 and 2004, she was still able to go to parades where all you had to do is walk. Then she didn't cough as much. Eventually even that got to be too much stress. Lacey was retired from the show ring and traveling in 2005. She was 19 years old. |

Since Lauren was too young to ride a horse in a parade at this time, we dressed up Happy and her to match Krystle and Starfire. Her dad, John, dressed up to match Kelly and Lacey. He led his rottweiler, Izzy, in costume. We got a LOT of attention as you can see from the newspaper article!! |

Lacey now spends her days out in the pasture eating and lounging. This photo was taken in the summer of 2007. Lacey is 21 years old in this photo with Kelly. Nobody has ridden Lacey in over a year. Her emphysema gets worse and worse every year. Our Vet told us to put her down last year but we just couldn't. She still might have a couple more years left for us to pet her and love her. We thank her for all the special memories she's given us over the years and hope there are many more pictures to come to be loaded onto this page. |
This photo taken March, 2008. Lacey is still with us and looking very well. :o) She is now 22 years old. |
